Humorous
We are a multicultural couple--my fiance is Japanese and Lithuanian, while I am Cuban. He told me that he wanted to make dinner for me on Valentine's Day, and when I spied a small pastry above the refrigerator that day, I wondered if he might have put an engagement ring inside. For the main course, he roasted a stuffed red snapper and sea bream—both whole—serving the latter to me. To the strains of “It’s De-Lovely,” asked me to look for “something different” inside my fish. As my face registered shock at the sight of a bright green ring, he blurted out, “Will you marry me?” It was only later that I found out the sea bream, or tai, is called the “wedding fish” in Japan and symbolizes good fortune; the stone in the ring turned out to be antique jade from one of his grandmother’s hair ornaments!
